Research Methodology (Final Version)

A. Survey-Interview

  1. The survey-interview will consist of 10 different photos taken of people camouflaged in both analogue and digital pixelated camouflage uniforms in the forest.
  2. Through the phototaking process, more than 10 shots are taken. We will select from the raw shots the final 10 that will be used for the survey. We will have 5 photos with a concealed person wearing Digital Camouflage, and 5 photos with the concealed person wearing the striped Analogue Camouflage.
  3. The photos are arranged in a keynote slide presentation such that each photo will be revealed to the participants of the survey when the the timer has started.
  4. The participants of the survey will be selected randomly from SST students or the family members of the students. This will exclude the elderly, as their eyesight may have degenerated, which will make the survey inaccurate.
  5. We will show them the 10 pictures (on the MacBook). The subjects will seat upright with an appropriate distance from the table to prevent discrepancies.
  6. We will unveil each photo, and start the timer, until the test subjects points out the camouflaged person in the photo.
  7. We will continue the same process for the other 9 pictures.
  8. We will record the data in the Data Processing form, while finding the average timings for both types of camouflage uniforms.
  9. Each person in the group (4 people) will interview 10 people, with a final total of 40 people surveyed.
B. Physical Spotting Test

Preparation
  • Materials Required: Binoculars, Digital & ERDL Camouflage uniforms, Results record form.
  • Camouflaged subjects will hide in forest opposite Gate B (outside General Office).
  • Spotters will wait behind the wall at Gate B, until it is their turn to spot. They are not supposed to go outside the wall or look outside the forest, as it will make their results inaccurate.
  • Spotters will start their viewing when just outside Gate B.

Conducting of Test
  • We are recording down the amount of time taken to spot someone camouflaged in either digital or striped camouflage through a binoculars.
  • The test is held during day, when there is no rain.
  • The two camouflaged persons will be camouflaged simultaneously at different places in the forest.
  • When the spotter is brought out, he will be given a triangulation of an area where the subject he is supposed to find first is at. This is pointed out to the spotter. The other camouflaged subject’s triangulated area will only pointed out after first subject is found.
  • Start with digital camouflage first. Point out the estimated range where the subject is at. This will be about 10m-15m.
  • Time the spotter with stopwatch after signaling him to start. He will tell us to stop with a verbal signal.
  • When he shouts, we stop the timer, and record it down according to the type of camouflage he was supposed to find.
  • The spotter will have to stop using the binoculars until he is told to start to spot for the other camouflaged subject.
  • Again, point out triangulated area. Time with stopwatch, and record down the results when he is done.
  • Repeat procedure for other spotters.
  • When results are collated, find the average timings to come to a conclusion of the results.
