Lit Review Sanjana Suha (09)


There are not many researches on the camouflage uniforms worn by solders from all over the world which are open to the public. This review will focus on some of the critical factors used to determine how to chose an efficient pattern and how they are being tested.

Determining an accurate and correct pixilated pattern is very critical as it can help to save the lives of many soldiers. From an article called ‘Uncloaked: How army is testing new camo to replace flawed plan’ the results after interviewing the ‘Father of digital camouflage’, O’Neill, a retired Army officer who does not have any part in the Army’s decision emphasized that the critical factor deciding the correct camouflage pattern is not letting the total cost of the camouflage patter dictate the reason for choosing it. He also boldly suggested that the requirement for finding a pattern that can suite any environment was the wrong way of going for doing things as every environment has it’s own colour requirement.

The article also mentioned that the testing of the new camouflage patter is top secret and lengthy, using a blend of computer simulations and going out into the respective environment specified for the pattern and testing it out by measuring precisely how many milliseconds trained observers need to spot and identify the targets, men wearing the patterned uniform. The evaluation process blends the intricacies of brain and vision science with the evolving art of textile deception a battlefield strategy first used in World War I.
