There has been much controversy over the use of digital pixelated camouflage and it’s effectiveness. This review is focused on the results of the studies which repeatedly assure the effectiveness of the pixelated camouflage as compared to the normal analogue camouflage. The literature primarily focuses on research done by researchers but also features the authors’ own opinions. Although this literature may be biased, this review will aim to extract the necessary information about the research on the effectiveness of digital pixelated camouflage.
The digital pixelated camouflage MARPAT has been shown to be at least twice as effective as the analogue camouflage NATO, according to research by the Office of Naval Research. The research states that the amount of time taken to spot the MARPAT camouflage was averaged at 2.5 seconds while that of the NATO was 1.0 and that of the monocolour was slightly less than 1.0. This suggests that the MARPAT is the most effective of the three types of camouflage. However, there are also certain types of digital pixelated camouflage which are highly ineffective.
The writer suggests that the camouflage ARPAT, which was derived from MARPAT and designed for multiple environments, is highly ineffective. As seen in the picture, the uniform is extremely pale as compared to the analogue camouflage, due to the removal of the colour black. This, according to the writer, has thus made camouflage in all the environments ARPAT is designed for- Woodland, Desert and Urban extremely difficult as the colour scheme is unable to fit in.
